Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon mahleb (ground cherry pits)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the sugar, vanilla, orange zest, mahleb, and cardamom to the saucepan. Stir the ingredients together until they are well combined and the sugar has dissolved, about 5-10 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the baking powder and flour. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Drop tablespoon-sized balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each ball.
  5. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until they are lightly golden around the edges.
  6. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy!
